Play Therapy FAQ

Why Play?

Play is a child's natural form of communication just as talking is an adult's natural way of communication. Children, even children who are quite talkative, express themselves more fully through their play. Emotions are often difficult to understand for children and even more difficult to express. Play provides a non-threatening way for children to express themselves.

Moreover, play therapy is regarded as an evidence based practice.

How can play benefit my child?

Because play is a non-threatening way for children (and adults) to express their emotions, there are a multitude of benefits:

  • Encourages open and voluntary communication
  • Builds trust and mastery
  • Fosters learning and acceptable behaviors
  • Regulates emotions
  • Reduces stress
  • Promotes creative problem solving
  • Elevates spirit and self esteem

What issues does play therapy address?

Play therapy, is not limited to, but can treat:

  • Depression
  • ADHD
  • Impulsiveness
  • Conduct Disorder, like bullying
  • Aggression
  • Anxiety and Fearfulness
  • Low self-esteem
  • Social withdrawal
  • Reading Difficulties and other school-related problems

Did you know?

Play therapy is an evidenced-based practice. This means that the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the leading force in evaluating and promoting mental health interventions based on "Quality of Research and Readiness for Dissemination", supports and promotes the use of play therapy as an effective mental health intervention. Counselors promoting themselves as Registered Play Therapists must have specialized training and credentials.
