-Gary Thomas: A Lifelong Love
Couples and Family Therapy is a branch of psychology which works with couples and families to mature and develop healthy relationships.
What do Marriage and Family Therapist do?
Marriage and family therapists seek to disarm conflicting verbal communication; increase intimacy, respect, and affection; remove barriers that create a feeling of stagnancy and create a heightened sense of empathy and understanding within the context of the relationship. Couples counseling is about learning conflict-management tools that can help enrich a marriage.
Myths about Marriage:
Myth #1 - Marriage benefits men to the disadvantage of women.
Both men and women benefit from a happy marriage including mental and physical health. Men tend to benefit more, mostly because the health outcomes of single men are much lower than that of single women.
Myth #2 - Your true love will automatically know what to say and do to make you happy.
There is a fear that if you must ask for something then it doesn’t ‘count’ or it’s not as meaningful. However, since our partners can’t read our minds, it’s important for each of us to communicate our needs in a marriage.
Myth #3 - Differences will ruin your marriage.
It isn’t the differences in a marriage that potentially destroy it. It’s the way we respond to those differences that’s the key.
Myth #4 – Never go to bed angry.
Not all disagreements can be settled quickly or by the flip of a coin. Couples who stop fighting can cool down and solve problems together in a short time.
Myth #5 – Couples therapy is for broken marriages.
Most couples wait six years after the onset of problems to seek counseling and by that time, it is often too late, given that half of marriages end within the first seven years. Most folks think of marriage counseling as an attempt to save a troubled marriage, but it can be very beneficial to low conflict couples.
We look forward to the opportunity to help you, your partner and your family find balance, control, and fulfillment!
